Website Speed Optimization That Passes Core Web Vitals

A slow website costs you visitors, leads and rankings. We find what's dragging your pages down, fix it at the source and prove the result with Google's own tools. We did it to our own site first.

What It Is

What is website speed optimization?

Website speed optimization is the work of making pages load and respond faster: shrinking images, removing or delaying heavy scripts, trimming code, caching pages and tuning the server. The goal is a site that feels instant on a phone and passes Google's Core Web Vitals.

Speed matters for two reasons. People leave slow pages, especially on mobile data, so a faster site keeps more of the visitors you already paid to attract. And Google uses page experience, including Core Web Vitals, as one of its ranking signals, so a sluggish site starts every search with a handicap.

Speed also affects AI search. Many AI crawlers fetch pages quickly and don't run JavaScript, so a lean page with its content in the HTML is easier for them to read and cite.

Signs your site needs speed work

  • PageSpeed Insights shows a mobile score in red or orange
  • Search Console flags "Poor" or "Needs improvement" URLs
  • The page jumps around while it loads
  • Buttons feel laggy when you tap them on a phone
  • A page builder, slider or hero video loads before anything else
  • Chat widgets, pixels and tag managers all load at once

Core Web Vitals, Explained Plainly

The three numbers Google watches

Google measures real visitors' experience with three Core Web Vitals. To pass, at least 75% of page visits need to hit the "good" mark for each one.

LCP: Largest Contentful Paint

How long until the main content shows up. Usually your hero image or headline. Good is 2.5 seconds or less. Big unoptimized images, slow servers and render-blocking CSS are the usual culprits.

INP: Interaction to Next Paint

How quickly the page reacts when someone taps or clicks. Good is 200 milliseconds or less. Heavy JavaScript from page builders, chat widgets and tracking scripts is the most common cause of lag.

CLS: Cumulative Layout Shift

How much the page jumps around while loading. Good is 0.1 or less. Images without set dimensions, late-loading fonts and banners that push content down cause most shifts.

PageSpeed Insights also gives a lab score from 0 to 100. It's a useful diagnostic, but the field data from real visitors is what Google uses for rankings, so we track both.

What We Fix

Speed problems, fixed at the source

No plugin stacking and no score-gaming tricks that break your site. We fix the real causes.

Images & video

Convert to WebP, resize for each screen with responsive srcset, set width and height to stop layout shift, lazy-load below the fold and recompress oversized hero videos.

Third-party scripts

Delay tag managers, analytics, ad pixels, chat widgets and accessibility overlays until the visitor interacts, so they stop competing with your content. Tracking still works.

CSS & JavaScript

Remove unused code, inline the critical CSS, defer non-essential scripts and strip page-builder and theme assets your pages don't need.

Fonts

Self-host and preload the fonts you use, drop the weights you don't and stop text from reflowing as fonts arrive.

Caching & hosting

Server-level page caching, a CDN, modern PHP and a tuned database. If your host is the bottleneck, we can move you to our managed WordPress hosting.

WordPress cleanup

Audit plugins, replace heavy ones with lighter options, clean database bloat and fix slow queries, without breaking forms, stores or tracking.

Proof: Our Own Website

How we took our site from 47 to 96

In October 2026 we rebuilt orangeskywebsites.com. Google PageSpeed Insights scored the old homepage 47 on mobile and 74 on desktop. The new one scores 96 on mobile and 100 on desktop.

We kept WordPress for the blog, forms and payments, and changed how pages are delivered:

  • Replaced a heavy theme and page builder on key pages with lean, hand-built HTML
  • Inlined the CSS so nothing blocks the first paint
  • Self-hosted and preloaded our fonts
  • Served every image as sized WebP with responsive srcset
  • Held Google Tag Manager, the Meta pixel, the chat widget and the accessibility tool until the first interaction
  • Kept server and page caching in front of everything

How It Works

Our speed optimization process

  1. Measure

PageSpeed Insights, Search Console Core Web Vitals and a full waterfall of what loads and when.

  2. Diagnose

A prioritized list of what's slowing each key page, with expected impact.

  3. Fix safely

Changes made on a staging copy first, then tested on real phones.

  4. Verify

Before-and-after scores, plus checks that forms, tracking and checkout still work.

  5. Keep it fast

Optional monitoring so new plugins or content don't slow things down again.

FAQ

Website speed questions

Can you guarantee a 100 PageSpeed score?

No. Scores depend on your content, features and third-party tools, and they vary from test to test. We commit to fixing the real causes of slowness and showing you honest before-and-after measurements.

Do you only speed up websites you built?

No. We optimize existing WordPress sites built by anyone. If your site runs on another platform, we'll review it and tell you what's realistic.

Will speed optimization break my tracking or forms?

It shouldn't. Delayed scripts still fire, just after the page has loaded or the visitor interacts. We test forms, analytics, pixels and checkout after every change.

Does page speed really affect Google rankings?

It's one of many signals. Speed alone won't outrank better content, but between similar pages a faster one has an edge, and faster pages convert more of the visitors you get.

How long does speed optimization take?

Most WordPress sites can be meaningfully improved in a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on how many templates and plugins are involved. Google's field data takes about 28 days to fully reflect the change.
